ABOUT WOMEN’S RECOVERY SERVICES

Women’s Recovery Services (WRS) is a solution for families broken by a mother’s addiction. Neglected children get their mother back, smile again, and swing open a new gate to the future. Mothers become sober, healthy, independent parents who bond the family together for the long term. WRS provides a 120-day residential substance dependence treatment program primarily for pregnant and parenting women with their infants and children, a Children’s Program, an eight month AfterCare program and up to two years in a transition home.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the leadership of the Executive Director (ED), the Development Director (DD) will spearhead development efforts as WRS continues to grow. A new position in the organization, the DD will have the opportunity to build the development function. The DD is responsible for leading all aspects of fundraising and donor engagement to ensure a diversified and sustainable revenue stream for WRS. This includes strategic oversight of grant management, individual and institutional giving, donor cultivation and stewardship, and special event planning. The Director will collaborate across teams to craft compelling proposals and foster meaningful relationships with funders and donors. This role will advance WRS’s mission by aligning fundraising strategy with organizational goals and community impact.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Development Director reports to Executive Director, Diana Madrigal and does not have any direct reports.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Grant Management

  • Lead the development, submission, and management of foundation grant proposals, ensuring alignment with funding priorities and organizational needs. 

  • Lead and oversee the full grant lifecycle, including prospect research, proposal development, submission, compliance monitoring, and timely reporting to foundation, corporate, and government funders.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with programs, finance, and executive team to gather data, develop compelling narratives, and ensure alignment between grant objectives and organizational goals.

  • Maintain and strengthen relationships with institutional funders through proactive stewardship, impact communication, and identification of renewal and multi-year funding opportunities.

Fund Development Leadership

  • In coordination with the WRS Board Fund Development Committee, lead the development and execution of WRS’s annual fundraising plan to ensure a diversified and sustainable revenue stream.

  • Provide strategic leadership for all fundraising initiatives, including individual giving, major gifts, annual campaigns, planned giving, and special events to drive sustainable revenue growth.

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive development plan aligned with organizational priorities, engaging staff, board members, and volunteers in fundraising efforts.

  • Analyze fundraising performance metrics to evaluate ROI, identify trends, and optimize strategies for donor acquisition, retention, and long-term relationship building.

Donor Cultivation

  • Cultivate, steward, and strengthen long-term relationships with major donors through personalized engagement, strategic communication, and tailored giving opportunities to ensure sustained support for WRS’s mission.

  • Build and manage a donor portfolio, developing tailored cultivation and stewardship strategies to deepen engagement and increase giving from individuals, foundations, and corporate partners.

  • Plan and execute personalized donor touchpoints, including one-on-one meetings, site visits, events, and impact reports, to foster meaningful relationships and demonstrate mission impact.

  • Partner with the CEO and board members to identify, cultivate, and solicit gift prospects, ensuring consistent and strategic donor outreach at all levels of the giving pipeline. 

Special events

  • Manage the event coordinator.

  • Lead the strategy, planning, and execution of fundraising and stewardship events, including donor receptions and community engagement activities, to elevate the organization’s visibility and revenue.

  • Collaborate with internal teams, board members, and volunteers to ensure events are mission-aligned, well-attended, and effectively integrated into broader development goals.

  • Oversee event budgets, timelines, and vendor relationships to ensure high-quality experiences that strengthen donor engagement and maximize return on investment.

Giving Campaigns

  • Design and execute multi-channel giving campaigns—including annual appeals, year-end campaigns, and giving days—to drive donor participation and increase unrestricted revenue.

  • Develop compelling messaging and donor segmentation strategies in collaboration with communications staff to ensure personalized, mission-driven outreach across digital and print platforms.

  • Analyze campaign performance data to evaluate effectiveness, inform future strategy, and enhance donor engagement and retention.

Donor Stewardship

  • Manage the implementation of WRS’s stewardship program, ensuring donors receive timely, accurate, and meaningful acknowledgments that reinforce impact and encourage continued support.

  • Collaborate with program and communications teams to create meaningful stewardship materials, including impact reports, success stories, and updates tailored to donor interests.

  • Maintain accurate donor records and track stewardship activities in the CRM to support relationship-building efforts and ensure a seamless donor experience.

COMPETENCIES

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.

  • Five years progressively responsible fundraising experience in development.

  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills.

  • Strong strategic and implementation skills; ability to grasp emerging opportunities and challenges of the organization and the role; adept at creating and implementing strategic fundraising plans.

  • Ability to design, implement, and evaluate comprehensive development strategies that drive revenue growth and align with organizational priorities.

  • Expertise in managing the full grant lifecycle, from prospect research and proposal writing to compliance, reporting, and funder stewardship.

  • Proven skill in building and maintaining strong, long-term relationships with donors through personalized engagement and impact-driven communication.

  • Experience planning and executing giving campaigns.

  • Competence in leading fundraising and stewardship events, including budgeting, vendor coordination, and integration with broader development goals.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage staff, board members, and volunteers in fundraising efforts.

  • Proficiency in using donor databases and analytics tools to maintain records, track performance, and inform strategy.
