POSITION OVERVIEW

The Osher Marin JCC (JCC) is seeking a chief development officer (CDO) to energize donors and build on its recent successes to support its mission and accelerate its fundraising efforts to support growth and sustainability. Over the last three years, the JCC has increased its charitable revenue from 11% of its total annual budget to 25% and has grown from an annual $1.5m fundraising program to that of $3.5m. At the same time, it has put in place best practices and techniques necessary to engage its leaders in meaningful fundraising activity. It is an exciting time for the new CDO who will be able to build on recent success and grow fundraising to match future aspirations of the JCC.

The CDO is a collaborative leader who will set the strategic vision for the JCC’s fundraising efforts. In partnership with the CEO, the CDO is responsible for all fundraising and development activities. The successful candidate will help forge meaningful new relationships and steward existing ones to build the JCC’s visibility, impact, and financial resources. 

The CDO will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing fundraising program to exceed $4M annually through cultivation of major gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations for annual giving and special initiatives each year. The CDO will also work closely with the board of directors and development committee and to coach board members as they take on an increasingly more active role in fundraising.

As a key member of the senior leadership team, the CDO meets monthly with other department heads and will help set the vision for the JCC’s future.  The CDO will expand and diversify the JCC’s donor base and work closely with staff leaders to secure funding for annual giving and new initiatives

The CDO must have a proven track record of taking a creative, entrepreneurial, and institution-building approach to their work.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

The CDO reports directly to the CEO. The CDO manages two full-time professional fundraisers including an Annual Giving Officer and Foundation Officer and half-time administrative assistant.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with CEO, board, and senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive annual and multi-year written Development Plan, which includes strategies, measurable goals, and objectives to secure and grow annual, major, and planned gift support.

  • Accept primary responsibility for managing a portfolio of top donors and prospects capable of making 5-, 6-, and 7-figure gifts, engaging CEO, and partnering with other staff and board members, as appropriate.

  • In collaboration with the CEO and board chair, create opportunities for board members to engage in fundraising activities to leverage their networks and expertise.

  • Expand and diversify major donor program by identifying new prospects, crafting opportunities with program staff for philanthropic investment, and cultivating deeper ties with existing donors.

  • Provide regular reports of fundraising progress to keep the CEO, Board of Directors and committee members informed of progress towards goals.

  • Perform research related to funding sources and trends to help position the JCC in relationship to its peer organizations and ahead of major funding changes or trends.

  • Work with marketing team to develop and evolve the overall messaging and creative storytelling within digital and print publications to appeal to various donor and member constituencies.

  • Work with accounting and finance team to develop and monitor financial budgets.

  • Represent the JCC, along with the CEO and board, in forming, cultivating, and sustaining vibrant and effective community partnerships with nonprofits, foundations and corporations within the Jewish and Marin County community. 

  • Provide strong leadership and effective management for the development team, creating an environment of respect, creativity, opportunities for growth and professional education.

  • Oversee a comprehensive planned giving program including marketing, outreach, cultivation events, and create and manage a planned giving portfolio.

  • Oversee annual calendar of events strategy which includes small and large in-person and occasional virtual events, as needed

  • Oversee development and execution of all grant proposals, reports, and donor communications, with a long-term, relationship-building approach.

  • Oversee monitoring of all donor information in Salesforce; provide and present statistical analysis to the CEO, board, and senior leaders.

  • Perform additional duties as requested by the CEO.

COMPETENCIES

  • High energy, creativity, passion for and dedication to the mission of the JCC, essential.

  • Ten+ years’ progressive fundraising experience with a sizable, high-performing organization that includes annual, major, capital, and planned fundraising; demonstrated success in securing major gifts will be an advantage as will experience identifying and stewarding long-term relationships with donors with evolving priorities.

  • Demonstrated track record and success in curating meaningful donor opportunities based on existing and new initiatives and cultivating and soliciting 5-,6-, and 7-figure gifts in support of them.

  • Demonstrated skills in motivating, directing and managing staff, and in coordinating and supporting the fundraising activities of others, including board leadership; outstanding interpersonal skills.

  • A good listener and strategist; comfortable receiving input from many sources, and able to analyze and formulate disparate information into a sound, well-organized plan; gravitas to challenge assumptions and stay focused on institutional priorities.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build genuine, long-term relationships based on a passion for the JCC’s mission.

  • Experience working with the Jewish philanthropic community is highly valued.

  • Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives who educates and nurtures staff so they might grow and advance in their knowledge.

  • Straightforward and self-possessed; one who shares information readily, listens as well as gives advice and respects the abilities of others; diplomatic.

  • Planned giving knowledge and ability to market, cultivate, and solicit planned gifts including bequests, charitable remainder trusts, gifts of property, stocks, IRAs, and more.

  • Embrace innovation and technology; Salesforce experience is strongly desired. Additionally, experience preferred with other cloud- and computer-based programs, including Google Drive, Excel, etc.

  • Highest ethical standards and respect for confidentiality.

  • Ability to stay current with fundraising and nonprofit best practices.

  • High degree of cultural competency, required.

  • Minimum of five years of supervisory experience, required.

  • Willingness to travel and to work long hours as necessary.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

  • CFRE or advanced degree or certifications preferred.

  • Must maintain a healthy sense of humor.
