ABOUT HOSPICE GIVING FOUNDATION

Hospice Giving Foundation is an independent foundation established in 1997. HG Foundation provides leadership and direction for exceptional end-of-life (EOL) care throughout Monterey and San Benito Counties. HG Foundation -programs include being the primary funder for EOL services, providing extensive public education on planning, preparedness, options for care, and effective communications, as well as convening clinicians and community leaders to collaborate on system improvements and professional education. HG Foundation works closely with funded agencies and partners to identify critical needs and prioritize funding to benefit individuals with serious illness, families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals/organizations. HG Foundation is fully funded by local donors, businesses, and select foundations and through its 25-year history has granted more than $31MM dollars to mission-related local non-profits.

Our community-based support promotes personal choice, preparedness, and the highest standards of compassionate, dignified end-of-life care for individuals and their loved ones. Dedicated to HOPEGives, a community/social health movement, that builds cultural attitudes of hope, understanding, and acceptance for end of life, Hospice Giving Foundation takes a leadership role advocated for an integrated system of quality resources and evolving best practices for personalized end-of-life care. 

POSITION OVERVIEW

The President & CEO is responsible to ensure the Foundation has clear strategic direction, adopts, and implements best practice governance models, is transparent and authentic in operations, adheres to board-approved investment and spending policies, complies with regulatory requirements, applies equitable and objective standards to grantmaking, and in conjunction with the Board of Directors, maintains fiduciary oversight of the organization.  

Together with the Board of Directors, the President & CEO sets direction, strategy, policies, and organizational goals. The President & CEO leads and oversees fundraising strategy, manages workplace and operational tasks, as well as selects, oversees, directs, and evaluates staff. The President & CEO must follow the highest standards of accountability and build internal and external relationships through leadership marked by open communications, commitment to the mission, and ongoing evaluation and assessment.    

In partnership with the Chair of the Board of Directors, the President & CEO supports and monitors board performance, fiduciary oversight, and leadership. With the Chair of the Board of Directors, the President & CEO provides leadership to ensure organizational growth, stability, and mission impact.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the Board of Directors and oversees a team of six.

OPPORTUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Salary range is $170,000-$200,000

  • Benefits include:

    • Vacation: Three weeks paid vacation (negotiable).

    • Holidays: 8 paid holidays and additional 5-6 days during Christmas and New Year's Day.

    • Sick Leave: Employees earn ten (10) days of sick leave per year (80 hours). Sick and personal leave are earned at an accrual rate of 3.3 hrs./pay period.  

    • Health and Dental Care: Employer pays full premium for the employee.  Employees may elect to provide coverage for dependents and/or spouse.

    • Vision: Employees may elect to enroll in vision coverage. Premiums are deducted pre-tax from employee’s paycheck once a month; estimated cost is just under $20/month.

    • 403(b) Retirement: HGF will contribute 5% of each employee's gross wage monthly. Employees may elect to make pre-tax contributions as well.

    • Flexible Spending Account: Employees may elect to participate in the FSA which provides a payment option for non-covered medical expenses through pre-tax payroll deductions.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Vision and Leadership

  • Provide inspirational leadership and direction to staff and board and ensure the continued development and management of a professional and efficient organization.

  • Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship with the Board of Directors and ensure open communication about the operations of HG Foundation and performance against agreed-upon benchmarks and goals.

  • In concert with the Board of Directors, define and implement strategies that will ensure the budget, staff, and priorities are aligned with Hospice Giving Foundation’s core mission.

  • Establish effective decision-making processes that will enable Hospice Giving Foundation to achieve its long- and short-term goals and objectives.

  • Facilitate exceptional board/staff partnerships and ensure the Board of Directors has the support and assistance needed to effectively manage their roles.

  • In partnership with the Board, help build a diverse and inclusive Board representative of the community, who is highly engaged and willing to leverage and secure resources.

  • Manage all legal matters related to the Foundation.

Finance 

  • Accountable for meeting financial goals through budget preparation and ongoing, day-to-day monitoring of the fiscal standing of the organization.

  • Set staff salaries in accordance with the local standards and skills and expertise of the individual staff.

  • Prepare quarterly financial reports that are reviewed and approved by the Board Treasurer, then presented to the Board of Directors.

  • Staff the Investment Advisory Committee, prepare the agenda in consultation with the committee chair and per the standing topics scheduled to be discussed quarterly, and maintain regular communication with the contracted investment advisory firm.

  • Delegate specific tasks to the contractual bookkeeper/accountant.

  • Participate fully in the annual audit.

  • As part of the grants management process, ensure prudent disbursement of grant funds. 

Fund Development

  • In coordination with the development team, lead strategy to ensure fundraising efforts, Including Identification and cultivation of existing and prospective donors and establishing relationships, lead to major gifts.

  • Promote an internal culture of philanthropy in partnership with the Board of Directors.

  • Ensure that the flow of funds permits Hospice Giving Foundation to make continuous progress towards the achievement of its mission.  

  • Ensure funds are allocated properly to reflect present needs and future potential and to honor donor intent.

  • Work in concert with the VP, Director of Philanthropy and Board to cultivate, solicit, and steward donors to deepen meaningful, mission-connected relationships with supporters at all levels.

Communications

  • Ensure all communications reflect the values, vision, and mission of HG Foundation and set the standards for both internal and external communications.

  • Formulate and oversee comprehensive marketing, branding, and development strategies that will ensure consistency throughout the organization and enhance revenue from major donors, foundations, government agencies, and corporations.

  • Maintain active community engagement; must be visible to the community and convey the mission, vision, and impact of Hospice Giving Foundation.

  • Maintain consistent communications with grantee and service providers relative to HG Foundation’s mission to stay abreast of current trends, issues, and needs for EOL services in the service region.

Infrastructure and Operations

  • Ensure consistent, high-quality organizational processes while managing current and future growth.

  • Define the duties and responsibilities of all staff.

  • Support and motivate the organization’s staff; manage all personnel matters.

  • Facilitate cross-departmental collaboration to strengthen communications with staff throughout the organization.

  • Create and promote a positive, multicultural work environment that supports consistency throughout the organization’s strategy, operational methods, and data collection needs.

  • Set, review, and monitor compliance with organizational policies and procedures, utilizing subject matter consultants as appropriate.

Programs and Grants

  • Examine the needs of the community and ensure programs (outreach, education, collaboratives, grants) are structured to meet those needs in the spirit of the mission of the organization.

  • Justify the delivery of new and existing programs through documentation of need and impact.

  • Establish efficiencies and consistency throughout the organization by developing and implementing standardized outreach for consumer education, resources, and professionals’ education relative to the EOL system of care.

  • Maintain open communications with stakeholders to inform program development and granting priorities.

  • Set priorities for grant funding that reflect current community needs and align with HG Foundation’s vision to promote understanding, acceptance, and preparedness for end-of-life. 

  • Develop and manage a well-defined grants management system including board training, grantee communications and impact reporting, transparent decision-making, and a need-centric, equitable grant application process.

COMPETENCIES

  • Minimum of a BA. MBA, MPA, or related advanced degree preferred

  • 15 to 20+ years of overall professional experience; the majority of which is in the non-profit sector

  • Prior nonprofit executive or accelerated leadership experience; management of a foundation preferred

  • Hands-on leadership and experience with small to midsize organizations preferred

  • Significant board development, governance, fundraising, marketing/branding, and fiscal management experience required

  • Financially savvy with the ability to set clear priorities, delegate, and guide investment in people and systems; keen analytic, organization, and problem-solving skills which support and enable sound decision-making

  • Nimble leader who is equally able to assess staying the course with taking calculated risks that can further the impact of the organization

  • Excellent coalition-building skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders; a persuasive negotiator able to achieve consensus amongst differing opinions

  • Outstanding presentation and communication skills and proven experience as and proclivity to be an outgoing spokesperson, relationship builder, and fundraiser

  • Strong commitment to the professional development of staff; successful track record of recruiting, managing and retaining a diverse team

  • Technically proficient in using available software to facilitate success within the realm of specific duties

  • Fully accountable for projects, goals, and tasks and adhere strictly to fundraising industry confidentiality standards

  • Evening and weekend hours may be required to meet donors and engage in community events

  • Out-of-area travel is rare but traveling within the county is routine
