Homeless Children’s Network (HCN) is a leading provider of trauma-informed behavioral health services to Black/African American families in San Francisco and the hub for a network of 50+ community-based organizations and agencies citywide. They provide whole-person mental health and family support to more than 2,000 children and families who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness. Their Afri-centric approach is built into every aspect of their work from service design to infrastructure, program delivery, community building, and healing.

POSITION OVERVIEW

HCN is growing rapidly. As the Associate Director of Development, you will have an exciting opportunity to have a big influence in an organization making a major impact in the unhoused community. Working closely with the Development Director and the Development and Communications team, key program staff, and external vendors, you will assist in facilitating development activities across the organization with a focus on cultivating major gifts, establishing relationships with various giving programs, and producing fundraising activities and events to support the mission and vision of HCN.

The right candidate is focused, organized, entrepreneurial and self-directed, with a high level of cultural and technical fluency. You’re someone who loves learning new technology and is a clear, direct communicator. Be ready to jump in and work, proactively meeting challenges and finding ways to advance HCN’s mission and the Development and Communications team.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the Director of Development. 

OPPORTUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Salary range is $80,000-$95,000

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Major Gifts (85%)

  • Assist the DoD in executing campaigns and major donor-related events.

  • Ensure consistent and appropriate contact with donors to facilitate or make solicitations and ensure effective stewardship.

  • Develop strategies to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donor prospects.

  • Coordinate production and mailing of Spring, Fall, and year-end appeal letters.

  • Maintain a portfolio of Major Giving donors/prospects with specific cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for each assigned prospect.

  • Coordinate virtual and in-person meetings to cultivate donor and prospect relationships.

  • Lead the annual appeal and other individual giving campaigns.

  • Prepare written materials such as proposals, solicitations, reports, and appeal letters.

  • Record and report key metrics through the use of internal tracking systems.

  • Provide customer service for donors as a primary point of contact.

Grants and Corporate Giving (10%)

  • Assist in identifying and cultivating giving programs with small, medium, and large individual donors as part of an annual campaign; prioritizes prospects; document all contacts; determine targeted results, tracks, and documents progress.

  • Assist in implementing an annual plan to increase business and civic group giving; determine targeted results, track, and document progress.

  • Support DoD in coordinating with Finance to process donations and prepare acknowledgement letters and other correspondence.

  • Create monthly fundraising reports and other donor database reports as needed.

  • Assist in writing grant proposals and developing event opportunities.

Other (5%)

  • Works with the advertisement and marketing departments to promote fundraising events using flyers, advertisements, and digital marketing outreach.

  • Assemble media and donor kits for events and meetings.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Development Director.

COMPETENCIES

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

  • 3-5 years of professional or volunteer experience demonstrating skills and accomplishments that are transferable to this role. These include:

  • Experience with relational databases is essential. Must be enthusiastic, highly organized, analytical, and able to adjust to changing priorities.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage several milestones and projects efficiently

  • Experience working with different operating systems including Windows and Microsoft Suite

  • Experience planning large-scale events and fundraisers is preferred

  • Experience working with a diverse team and promoting a positive brand image

  • Experience researching donation programs and opportunities available through local, state, and federal programs

  • Ability to work well with a team to promote company initiatives

  • Deep understanding of the causes, manifestations, and impacts of racism on Black/African American children and families, preferably in San Francisco or the Bay Area, acquired through experience and/or education

  • Highly compelling storytelling, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to adapt the style and format for different audiences and organizational needs

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously from design to completion, meet deadlines, produce high-quality deliverables, coordinate with and across teams, and change course, as needed, in a demanding work environment

  • High level of proficiency using online platforms to create and execute timely messaging and successful campaigns, as well as marketing and development tools for donor management (Bloomerang preferred), email marketing (MailChimp or other), content management (Wix or other), and project management (such as Monday.com)
